Gehrig, who played in 2,130 consecutive games, was diagnosed with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis or ALS, a disease that would later bear his name. Gehrig's "iron horse" frame began to deteriorate as a result of his disease. Two years later, in the midst of Joe DiMaggio's 56 game hitting streak, the baseball world mourned the death of the great Lou Gehrig.
